Training Application –
Multi-ship Air Combat
•Simulation used as inexpensive way to keep skills sharp
•Live flight limited due to security, flight safety, resources, range of flight
•Pilots train in a F-15 cockpit in a 40 foot dome with target projection
•SIMNET implements multi-user design utilizing pilots, weapons controllers, and enemies.

Situation awareness is hard to keep up for fighter pilots while outside of live action zones.   The simulator allows skill development without the expense and risk of live flight.  While nothing can replace live flight, simulation is a key training tool.

Simulation is high on the list of requested activities by pilots, training managers, and air weapons controllers.

McDonnell developed the SIMNET program standing for “Simulator networking” under sponsorship of the Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Army.  The key feature of the simulator was the use of independent processors in a distributed environment.  This allowed independent update of target and pursuit participants.

The design utilized F-15 cockpits with stick and throttle controls.  Each has a color touch screen front panel.
