(Cavazza, 2003) Virtual humans have become important in the development of intelligent user interfaces.  Their role can be as intelligent assistant and instructors or become part of the actual training scenario as a patient.

This simulator integrates a knowledge-based system with a 3-D virtual patient.  The medical students use the system to learn decision making during cardiac emergencies.

The use of a 3-D patient allows full view of a patient’s internal structure.

The work was spun off from Badler’s work on battlefield casualties.  In Badler’s system, field medics would learn how to deal with emergency treatment.  Cavazza’s simulation differs by using a physiological model of the patient’s internals.

Prior to invasive action, the trainee can also see the patient’s appearance and read-outs that would appear on a hospital’s heart monitor.
