According to
Coughlan (1995) a special purpose simulator is distinguished from a
simulation language or system by the three properties above. Most simulation systems are only used by
trained experts. The special purpose
simulator is developed to insulate a user from the complexities of the
underlying system.

The main part of a
special purpose simulator is the parameterized model of the system being
studied. The front end interface
guides the user in the set-up of the parameters in a similar manner to many
familiar software wizards.

Once the model is
run, the results are presented in report format.

These models have
been created for many industries and for many purposes. They are targeted at users with almost no
simulation experience. These include
manufacturing engineers and managers.

One MS Windows based
simulation package is SIMAN, a commercial spreadsheet, which uses BASIC as
the underlying programming language.
