(Eikenberry, 1999) An easy way to create metaphors to ease learning is to follow the 3C model.

Create – this is always a tough step in an endeavor, but you can help your creative ability by determining the part of a course you want to focus on.  Once you’ve determined what part you are going to work on, write down the general parts of the topic you wish to cover.  If you have small children or grandchildren, the next step may be easier.  Ask yourself how you would teach the topic to a 8 or 10 year old?  Write down all the ideas that come into your head, regardless of how silly they may seem. Go through the list and make associations with the list

Connect – this is a quick step.  Compare the metaphor ideas with the content of the topic.  Compare a potential metaphor with the content.  Ask yourself are the elements connected? How are they alike? How are they different?

Combine – determine how to combine the metaphor into your instructional flow.  Can it become a theme for the class?  Think about how to introduce it.  Can you use more than one of the senses to reinforce it?  Good Luck !
