Simulation – Simulation Study of a Hospital Automated Materials Handling System
•ACT – Automated Cart Transport system – to be implemented in the hospital •There is a need for studying a number of issues: manpower requirements, number of needed transporters, interfacing with other personnel using the system, scheduling •A simulation is the best way to analyze all these factors

ACT is a network of powered horizontal and vertical monorail conveyors which permits the movement of materials and supplies from the centralized supply processing and distribution center to the various decentralized areas throughout the hospital and vice versa

Factors that need to be studied include; the mix and numbers of carts – there are nine types of carts that are to be employed, each type having a different purpose; number of transporters; manpower – there will be a significant number of required personnel that will handle the system. There will also be interactions between people from other departments and the system (such as people from the food service department, accessing the system to transport food).

An optimal schedule would have to satisfy all the delivery demands: minimize capital investment, provide staffing patterns for every unit, minimize travel time etc.
